MBABANE – Unlucky.

Mbabane Highlanders supporters and team members passionately pray for the swift recovery of their injured defender, Melusi ‘Mega’ Magagula. The player suffered a devastating injury during the match against Royal Leopard at the KaLanga Technical Centre, two days ago, leaving his team and supporters reeling from shock and concern.

Ingwemabalabala won their MTN Premier League game over Inkunzi’ emmyama with a 2-0 victory. The Edwin Matsebula-led squad displayed an admirable performance, with midfielder Junior ‘Shisa Gesi’ Magagula and former Highlanders player Lungelo Tsabedze each delivering a goal apiece to secure the win.

Victory

Riding high on their victory, the police side ascended to the top of the log standings alongside Green Mamba, who also secured a 2-0 win against Sisonkhe on the same day. In addition to suffering a demoralising loss, the Mbabane giants were dealt a crushing blow as their vibrant right back, ‘Mega’, was taken to the hospital after sustaining a serious injury during the match. Sibonelo ‘Jekwa’ Simelane, the Royal Leopard player responsible for the incident, was reported to have delivered an elbow to the defender’s face, resulting in a severe injury that has left the player suffering vision loss.

According to a source within the Mthunzi Ginindza camp, the injured defender’s condition remains a cause for grave concern, as he was reportedly unable to see and in urgent need of further examination. The player was said to be en route to the Mbabane Government Hospital to undergo a CT scan, in an attempt to accurately assess the extent of the damage caused by the unfortunate incident.

According to experts, Computed Tomography (CT) scans of the eyes, facial area and sinuses may be done to look for problems in the eyes and the optic nerve. “I can express the deep worry and concern that we feel for Melusi Magagula and his family, who are currently enduring this difficult situation.

Witnessing the extent of his injury, particularly the loss of vision, has been profoundly distressing for all involved. We are taking swift action to ensure that he receives the necessary medical care, including a CT scan at the Mbabane Government Hospital, to accurately assess his condition,” the source said. The source also shared that an encouraging update on Magagula’s condition, stating that the player was in a better state today compared to yesterday.
The source further disclosed that, upon learning of the severity of Magagula’s injury, several players from the Royal Leopard team visited him in the hospital, expressing their concern and offering their support.
Meanwhile, confirming this development, the Royal Leopard’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Frank Hurube revealed that the team had indeed visited the injured Highlanders player, in the hospital to offer their support and well wishes.

“Upon hearing of the gravity of Melusi Magagula’s injury, we were deeply concerned and moved to visit him in the hospital, extending our support and heartfelt wishes for a swift recovery. As a team, we offer our sincere apologies for the unfortunate incident that occurred, and we pray for a full and speedy recovery. We remain committed to doing whatever is within our power to assist Melusi and his team throughout this challenging time,” he said.

Injury

According to a doctor who spoke on condition of anonymity and had knowledge of Magagula’s injury, the situation was found to be unusual. The doctor suggested that the recent injury may have been triggered by a similar incident that occurred during a match against Nsingizini Hotspurs in the previous season.

“Head injuries can be particularly insidious, often manifesting without immediately visible signs or symptoms, making them difficult to diagnose and treat. These types of injuries, if left untreated, can have severe long-term consequences for an individual’s health and well-being. It is crucial for those who have suffered head injuries, especially athletes who engage in contact sports, to receive prompt and thorough medical attention to minimise the risk of further damage,” he said.

The Eswatini football league has unfortunately experienced several serious injuries, with one of the most notable incidents being Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa’s severe head injury in 2017 while playing for Mbabane Swallows. The prolific striker for Green Mamba, suffered a debilitating brain injury while playing for Swallows, necessitating a craniotomy procedure that cost approximately E500 000.

Highlanders Public Relations Officer (PRO) Kenneth Dlamini confirmed that the player’s vision was affected after the incident, but asked to give more updates after the tests had been conducted.
