MBABANE – Dr Malvern Masango was celebrated for his fervent passion for cycling, inspiring friends, family, and colleagues to embrace the sport.

These sentiments were echoed by various speakers during the memorial service of the late MTN Khemani Cycling Club cyclist, held at Potter’s Wheel Church in Emafini, along Malagwane Road, yesterday. Dr Masango was knocked to death by a vehicle while cycling, last Saturday. The cyclist’s body is expected to be repatriated to Zimbabwe once all paperwork has been sorted. The funeral is expected to be held this weekend. Before the speakers took to the podium, an obituary was recited, highlighting the 45-year-old’s dedication as a medical professional, whose career began in Gutu, Zimbabwe, and extended across several prestigious institutions. A graduate of the University of Zimbabwe, he distinguished himself in his medical career, serving in hospitals and making significant contributions to national health initiatives in Eswatini.

Devoted

A devoted sportsman, he was actively involved in cycling, promoting health and fitness while nurturing young cyclists. Renowned for his warm personality and commitment to the community, Malvern was a cherished father and friend, and his profound impact on both the medical field and the local cycling community will be sorely missed. First to speak was his elder brother, Jeffrey Masango, who recounted their late father’s advice to respect him, referring to Malvern affectionately as ‘Madala’ from the age of five. His brother described him as ambitious and a perfectionist, treasuring his ability to change lives and his valued role within the family. “He loved sports and encouraged me to train, even now at 56,” he noted. Meanwhile, Aunty Playmore, speaking on behalf of the siblings, remembered him as both a mentor and a parental figure, reminiscing about their volleyball games together. She added that she often consulted him for medical advice.

Warrior

Mxolisi Shongwe, Secretary of the Eswatini Cycling Association (ECA), stated that they had lost a true warrior, remembering Dr Masango as someone who left behind a legacy demonstrating that dedication leads to achievement. In a poignant moment, the MTN Khemani team presented his family with the last kit he wore during the MTN Khemani Road Classic. Dr Futhi Dlamini, President of the club, called for stricter penalties for those found intoxicated while driving. The daughter of the late Dr Malvern Masango, Chichi, on the other hand, delivered a humorous tribute during her father’s memorial at Potter’s Wheel Church in eMafini. “My father wouldn’t let me eat KFC for a month. He insisted that I do not sleep late and he forced me to support Manchester United. We would watch all their games together, and eventually, I grew to like them,” she shared.
