ESWATINI MOURNS LEGENDARY GOLFER MADLOPHA
LOBAMBA – “He was one of the best amateur golfers in the country.”
This was said by Eswatini Golf Union (EGU) President Mandla Dlamini, in reaction to the passing on of veteran golfer Evart Madlopha. The latter, who is a former Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service, succumbed to an undisclosed illness. Even though he was no longer an active golfer before his demise, a few days ago; most golfers will remember Madlopha without their memories being jogged. On top of victories in tournaments that include AON, Wafa Wafa, Eswatini Royal Insurance Corporation (ESRIC) Monthly Mug, among others, Madlopha also defied odds with the elusive hole-in-hole, several years ago. This was during the Siphiwe Nyanda Golf Tournament at the Royal Swazi Spa Golf Course. In golf, a hole-in-one occurs when a ball hit from a tee finishes in the cup.
President Dlamini said they were deeply saddened by the passing on of Madlopha. “Evart was a true sportsman. He was one of the best amateur golfers in the country. “At Mbabane Golf Club, where he was a member for many years and was one of the past captains; he became one of role models upon whom many of the young players were looking up to,” he highlighted.
The EGU president shared that Madlopha played and served the sport with a high level of integrity and humility. “Evart had a very good sense of humour. I had the privilege of playing with him in Ezulwini in the Golf Business League, where he was my partner in the ESRIC team. I learnt a lot from him about the game of golf and leadership.“We pray that the Almighty God gives the entire family comfort during this sad time. May he rest in eternal peace,” said the president.
EGU Secretary Sifiso Dhlamini also shared the same sentiments, highlighting that the late legendary golfer had a unique way of hitting the ball.“Madlopha was a highly-competitive skilled golfer. His humility and loyalty will be missed,” said Dhlamini. Another veteran golfer to have rubbed shoulders with Madlopha is Gideon Mhlongo, who is the erstwhile Municipal Council of Mbabane Chief Executive Officer (CEO). “Golfers are shocked at his sudden passing on. He was an avid golfer par excellence; he related easily to all golfers and enjoyed the company of all golfers no matter who you were. “He was great fun to play and fellowship with afterwards. We will miss him, and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family,” said Mhlongo.About five years ago, Madlopha retired as a civil servant to pull the plug on an illustrious career spanning over three decades.
