MBABANE – “Eswatini is too small to have a 14-team league.”
These were the words of national team Sihlangu Head Coach Zdravko ‘Loga’ Logarusic, when commenting about the standard of the country’s football. The Croatian gaffer was speaking on Eswatini TV’s midday news bulletin, yesterday, disclosing that he is lucky to arrive in the country at the beginning of the 2024/25 season. He feels the country is too small to have a league with 14 teams and is of the idea that the football authorities consider reducing them to 10 in the future.

“This will help the teams to compete effectively and this will help the players to compete at the level needed for international competitions,” Logarusic said. He said currently, they have to choose from over 500 players. He highlighted that once the league is reduced to a lesser number, they would choose from around 250 to 300 players.“This will help us to choose better quality and competitive players for the national team,” he said. Logarusic said this is evident in that some local players only shine locally and struggle at the international level.
The Sihlangu gaffer also encouraged the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) to arrange for local coaches attachments to Europe to develop the sport in the country.

The coach’s opinion comes at a time when the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) members suggested a 16-team league in the 2025/26 season. It is worth mentioning that the country might have a 15-team league this season, should Manzini Wanderers win their pending case in the High Court of Eswatini today. Logarusic is currently in Mozambique with the national team for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers with ‘The Mambas’ at the Zimpeto Stadium, in Maputo. The action gets underway at 3pm.
