MBABANE - Eswatini athlete Bongiwe ‘Smally’ Mahlalela was celebrated for her outstanding accomplishments on the international stage at TUT awards ceremony in Pretoria, South Africa.
The prestigious event was staged two days ago. Mahlalela’s accomplishments were further recognised and celebrated during the prestigious Tshwane University of Technology (TUT)
In an interview, the talented athlete conveyed her happiness and pride in the recognition. She emphasised her role as a representative of both TUT and Eswatini, stating that she has proudly represented the university and her country on both local and international levels. “I’m deeply grateful to Tshwane University of Technology for the support they have provided me ever since I became a member of the TUT Athletics Club. Juggling academics and athletics is no easy feat, but with the grace of God, I have been able to persevere and push myself each day. I am truly blessed to have had the university’s backing throughout my journey,” she said.

The fastest woman in Eswatini, went on to reveal that her upcoming season is scheduled to commence in January, next year, although she anticipates starting her training and competitive season in either late February or early March, depending on her coach’s assessment of her fitness level. She expressed her eagerness to start her season and aims to collaborate with her coach to determine the most opportune time for her to commence. Meanwhile, the TUT International Participation Award acknowledged Mahlalela’s outstanding performances throughout the year, which included a bronze medal finish in an international tournament held in Slovenia, as well as significant improvements in her personal bests, which subsequently enabled her to represent Eswatini in the African Championships. This accolade serves as a fitting tribute to her hard work, dedication and remarkable achievements.
