MBABANE – Major boost!

The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) might receive a major subvention from the continental governing body in 2026. This good news came from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, during the 46th Extraordinary General Assembly, held this week. Motsepe outlined a plan to elevate African football on the global stage, with the ultimate goal of winning the World Cup. He mentioned that there are nearly 12 capable Member Associations (MAs) in the continent, with Morocco having proven some capabilities in 2022. To achieve this, however, he says the continent needs substantial financial support over the next eight years.

“The plan is to generate a revenue of one billion (US$1 billion) over the coming years. We’ll soon open a tender for potential sponsors and invite private companies and corporates to bid and be part of this initiative,” Motsepe said. The former Mamelodi Sundowns boss added that this plan has been presented to the executive committee, which will soon pass a resolution on it. He put emphasis on that every cent of this money will go towards youth football development, benefitting both boys and girls. “Part of the plan is for each MA to receive one million US dollars annually from CAF, starting in 2026,” the president stated.

The said amount converted to E17 686 099.30, according to yesterday’s market exchange rates.  Motsepe noted the urgent need for financial backing to develop football, despite the support MAs receive from their respective governments. He also expressed appreciation for the FIFA Forward Programme, which provides funding to MAs for football development. Earlier this year, CAF doubled its grants to affiliates following an increase in competition prize money. “There has been a significant progress, but US$ 400 000 (E7m) is still a small amount. We need much more, which is why I am grateful for the FIFA Forward Programme,” Motsepe added.

He also praised governments passionate about sports, noting their role in financing modern stadium construction, which he said was crucial for elevating football standards.
He stressed that the aim is for every country to have a compliant venue, as the executive committee understands the impact of playing in foreign lands.

Gratitude

Meanwhile, EFA President Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane expressed his gratitude for the funds, saying they will advance the country’s football development. He emphasised that this subvention, like FIFA grants, is dedicated solely to football development. Simelane also mentioned that these funds will be a catalyst in achieving Vision 2030, which includes Sihlangu’s goal of qualifying for their first TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
