MUZI TRIUMPHS OVER VETERAN ZULU IN ETTA POLLS
LOBAMBA – Eswatini Revenue Service’s (ERS) Muzi Dube is the new Eswatini Table Tennis Association President.
Early this year, the table tennis sensation defeated former President Percy Zulu at the Whistle Stop Engineering senior Table Tennis tournament in Matsetsa. This recent triumph marked his second victory over Zulu as he also secured the hot seat of the Eswatini Table Tennis Association (ETTA) presidency in the smooth elections that followed the annual general assembly (AGM) held at the OlympAfrica Centre in Lobamba yesterday.
The race for the presidency had been narrowed down to a tense two-horse race, as Busisizwe Dlamini withdrew his candidacy prior to the vote. With a nerve-wracking two-horse race that could be heard through the quiet yet tense atmosphere, every dropped ball and count of the votes seemed to echo throughout the OlympAfrica Centre. As the Electorate Officer (EO) Victor ‘Mavikane’ Dlamini meticulously tallied the votes, Dube secured a razor-thin margin of 12 votes, leaving his rival to settle with 10.
Redemption
The outgoing president found redemption in the race for the vice president position. Despite falling short in his bid for reelection as president, the veteran emerged victorious in a tightly contested election, edging out opponents such as the former Eswatini Swimming Association (ESA) President, Herman Jele. Meanwhile, during the AGM the sixth item on the provisional agenda, which sought to consider a proposal for amending the constitution, was left unaddressed. This was pursuant to Article 19.2 of the constitution and the recommendation of outgoing president, who suggested that the newly elected executive would be responsible for convening a separate meeting to consider and adopt the constitutional amendments.
Zulu’s justification for this decision was that engaging in the amendment process during the AGM would have consumed too much time, potentially disrupting the smooth flow of proceedings and delaying the completion of other important items on the agenda.
At the commencement of the election process, the Electoral Officer ‘Mavikane’, strongly emphasised the importance of conducting a fair and secret ballot. Addressing the members present, he encouraged them to avoid casting spoiled ballots, which could hinder the efficient completion of the electoral process. He further reminded the electorate to exercise their voting rights with confidentiality and integrity, thereby ensuring a free and fair election.
The newly elected president in his maiden speech recognised that the progress of table tennis in Eswatini required a collaborative effort from all stakeholders. Emphasising the importance of unity in the pursuit of success, the new president proclaimed that his mission was not a solo endeavour but rather a team effort. He emphasised the need for all stakeholders to work together in order to cultivate a thriving table tennis community in Eswatini and ensure the continued growth and development of the sport.
