MBABANE – The football community is mourning the loss of a true icon in Innocent ‘Ten Ten’ Ginindza, who passed away yesterday after a short illness.

Ginindza leaves behind an indelible legacy that will be cherished for generations. Close relatives confirmed the disturbing developments, yesterday. Ginindza was not just a top Mbabane Highlanders striker in his heydays; he was a symbol of the spirit and passion of the black and white ensemble. In the 1980s, Ginindza formed part of a Highlanders team that was nothing short of legendary.

Alongside the likes of Tholeni ‘Schuster’ Nkambule, Henry ‘Puma’ Kunene and Phumuza ‘Elkatib’ Ntshangase, he dazzled fans with his skill, determination and flair on the pitch. Playing as a number 11, Ginindza was affectionately nicknamed ‘Ghadaffi,’ a testament to his commanding presence and influence in the game. Ginindza’s crowning moment came in 1990, during the BP Cup semi-final against the then formidable Denver Sundowns, who boasted the fearsome Rodney ‘Stumbo Charles.’ In a match that would be etched in the annals of Highlanders history, Ginindza played a pivotal role in leading his team to a stunning 2-1 victory, showcasing his innate ability to rise to the occasion when it mattered most.

A product of the Highlanders juniors, Ginindza’s journey through the ranks was a testament to his dedication and love for the game. His early days at Lobamba National School saw him excel as a key player, cementing his reputation as one of the brightest talents of the late 80s. He was more than just a player; he was a beacon of hope for aspiring footballers in Eswatini. Ginindza will be remembered not only for his extraordinary talent, but also the joy he brought to countless fans. His infectious smile and unwavering commitment to Highlanders will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of watching him play.

He is expected to be laid to rest, this weekend, with the family to issue further details after a meeting. Meanwhile, Ginindza is one of several legends to have passed on, this year. They include Sibusiso ‘Boy Boy’ Nyembe of Moneni Pirates. The latter died in August.
