FINANCIAL STRUGGLES PLAGUE DENVER SUNDOWNS
MBABANE – “The players are finding it difficult to make ends meet.”
This information comes from a source close to MTN National First Division outfit Denver Sundowns, who allegedly disclosed that the team is facing significant financial challenges. The source claimed that the situation at the club is so dire that players are struggling to afford basic necessities like food and rent. “What is happening at the club is painful, concidering that the players are giving their all for the team, yet they are struggling to make ends meet,” the source stated.
Threatening
The source further alleged that some players now live in fear of being evicted, as landlords are threatening to lock them out of their houses. “The chairman once addressed the players on this matter, but so far, nothing has been done as the burden of running the club has been left to CEO Elvis Dube,” the source added. Ikappa Kappa Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dube confirmed that they are currently facing challenges in managing the team, but he was quick to highlight that he met with Chairman Mark Carmichael to discuss the issue. “It’s an open secret that we are struggling financially,” Dube said. Dube revealed that during his meeting with Carmichael, he mentioned that the doors are open for anyone interested in assisting with the club’s operations.
One of Sundowns’ Patrons, Tum Du Pont, when questioned about the team’s situation, stated that he is aware of the difficulties. “I am aware of the club’s situation, but it is not just the club struggling financially in the country; we are all facing economic challenges,” Du Pont said. He noted that running a football club in the country is strenuous due to its population and, as a senior citizen; it is his social responsibility to offer assistance where possible. “Sundowns continuously request my help, but the best person to comment is Mark,” he concluded. Carmichael, on the other hand, stated that football cannot sustain itself, as gate collections are insufficient to support the elite league teams.
