MBABANE – McKenzie does it again.
Daryl McKenzie, one of Eswatini’s most prominent anglers and a member of the national team, fell just 0.9 grammes short of achieving a bag weight of 10kg during a competition held at Mnjoli Dam over the past weekend. The event featured two days of angling on the dam, and McKenzie emerged as the most successful angler. This competition was significant as it marked the final opportunity for the Eswatini Angling Association (EAA) to shortlist national team anglers. EAA President Derek Hopf explained that the association will use the points accumulated from such competitions, based on the anglers’ finishing positions. “It was the national team selection weekend, so basically it was the last of the series; there have been four of them. The results of each session contribute to the national team log points,” revealed Hopf.

He further elaborated that the EAA needs to tally the log points and compile them into a schedule, which will ultimately determine the national log standings. “From that, we will then choose from number one down who wants to participate in which event,” said the EAA president. Looking ahead, Hopf highlighted that the EAA has four international events planned for next year. The first event will involve six teams of two competing in South Africa. Following that will be a Masters event, featuring six seniors over the age of 50, who will fish alongside the South African team on the same boat. After the Masters, the Region Five competition will take place, requiring 12 anglers and will be hosted by Zambia next year. Finally, the World Championships will demand six national team anglers, who will compete against teams from around the globe, with South Africa serving as the host nation once again.

In terms of his performance, McKenzie’s biggest catch during the competition was a 2.46kg bass. Bass is a common name for various species of ray-finned fish from the large clade Percomorpha, primarily belonging to the orders Perciformes and Moroniformes, which include both freshwater and marine species. Additionally, McKenzie caught a 2kg bass as his second-largest catch of the competition. His total bag weight after Saturday’s angling reached 9.91kg, comprising five bass. It is also noteworthy that McKenzie, along with his son Carter, was named the Lowveld Largemouth Series champion earlier in September. During that competition, which transitioned from Mpumalanga to Maguga Dam, the McKenzies achieved a remarkable bag weight of 10.53 kg.
