MBABANE - Mbabane Highlanders, the capital city’s esteemed football club, face the prospect of a hefty fine exceeding E100 000.

This follows a tumultuous encounter during Saturday’s MTN Premier League fixture. The match, held at Mayaluka Stadium, concluded in a goalless draw against Madlenya, but was overshadowed by disruptive incidents that could have spiralled into greater chaos without the timely intervention of marshals and police. The discord began just before the final whistle, when Highlanders goalkeeper Bhekisisa Dlamini received a red card after clashing with Madlenya’s Lindelwa Mngometulu, who allegedly provoked him.Dlamini retaliated, leading to his dismissal. In the ensuing confusion, Madlenya’s Melusi Tfwala approached the penalty spot, prompting Highlanders fans to mistakenly believe a penalty was imminent.

This misunderstanding incited a riotous reaction from the supporters, who threatened to storm the pitch. Thankfully, law enforcement managed to defuse the situation. Prior to the match, tensions flared as Highlanders failed to utilise the designated tunnel for their entrance, causing a delay due to disagreements regarding alleged substances spilt by Madlenya. Additionally, a Madlenya official faced hostility near the ‘Bull’ stand, while a Highlanders fan was nearly assaulted for donning a replica of Ally Group’s merchandise. After the match, police were required to escort match officials from the field amid a barrage of insults from Highlanders fans.

Charges

Under MTN Premier League regulations, the club could incur substantial fines if all charges are upheld. Article 7 outlines various infractions, including threatening conduct towards officials, which could result in fines ranging from E10 000 to E30 000, alongside potential compensation for affected individuals. Highlanders’ Director Ally Kgomongwe expressed his concern over the implications of such behaviour, noting that financial repercussions would ultimately fall upon him as owner. He advocated for the banning of individuals bringing the club’s name into disrepute, while also addressing unfounded claims of his assistance to Madlenya amid ongoing administrative challenges.
