IN HEATED EOCGA PRESIDENCY RACE, IT’S ... ‘BOMBER’ VS PETER SHONGWE
LOBAMBA – Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) incumbent President Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa is leading the race for the hot seat.
Mthethwa has received the highest number of nominations and he will contest against former President Peter Shongwe again, during the EOCGA elections. The association is also known as the National Olympic Committee. This upcoming election will culminate an annual general meeting (AGM) set to take place next Sunday, at the Happy Valley Hotel and Casino.
The details of this contest were confirmed in a final nomination list released by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Maxwell Jele, yesterday. ‘Bomber’ got 14 nominations, while Shongwe received a single nomination. In the previous election, Mthethwa recorded a landslide victory, getting 27 votes out of 37, while Shongwe received 10. Meanwhile, the vice-presidential race, however, promises to be a nail-biter.
Competition
The outgoing Vice-President (VP) Zakhele Dlamini, who also heads Athletics Eswatini (AE), will face stiff competition from outgoing EOCGA Board member Nhlanhla Maphanga and Temangcamane Maseko, who is the former Eswatini Taekwondo Federation (ETF) Secretary General. Maphanga garnered three nominations, while Maseko has received just one, and the outgoing VP stands strong with eight nominations. In the treasurer’s race, incumbent Zakhele Zulu appears set to continue in his role, having been nominated unopposed with seven votes.
Meanwhile, the competition for four additional member seats features eight candidates, including three women. They include the International Boxing Association (IBA) and EOCGA Board member Pearl Dlamini, Eswatini National Netball Association (ENNA) President Ntombikayise Masango and Princess Thobile, who is the President of Eswatini Judo Federation and EOCGA Board member.
Contenders
Other contenders for the additional seats include VP of the Eswatini Rugby Union (ERU) Simanga Magagula, Eswatini Boxing Association (EBA) President Webster Lukhele, former Manzini Wanderers Chairman, Reuben Nxumalo; along with Zakhele Dlamini and Board member Victor ‘Mavikane’ Dlamini. Meanwhile, the EOCGA CEO said this is the vetted list of candidates vying to lead the organisation for the next four years. Jele called on all nominees to respect the Olympic Charter, which firmly condemns election manipulation and corruption.
Jele warned that any candidate found guilty of misconduct will face disqualification. Candidates are also permitted to commence their campaigning efforts until the Election Day.
