ESWATINI SWIMMERS DIVE INTO GOLD IN NAMIBIA
MBABANE - Eswatini’s swimming athletes kicked off the Africa Aquatics Zone IV Championships in Namibia with an impressive performance.
The display is highlighted by two gold medals won by rising stars Chad Ning and Luca Fraser in their respective categories. Among the standout performers, young Luca’s remarkable time of 32.79 seconds in the 50 metres (m) breaststroke earned him a well-deserved gold medal and established a new age group record, surpassing the previous benchmark of 33.21, set by Luke Hall in 2004. Chad Ning also delivered an awe-inspiring performance, securing the gold medal with a time of 30.76 seconds, reinforcing his status as a formidable contender in the 50m breaststroke category.

The tenacious Dlamini sisters, Rachel and Leah, showcased their potential in their respective events, both achieving impressive first-time long course times in the 50m breaststroke.
Additionally, Tsailin Barbosa, Josea Potgieter, Kendra McNamara, Daniella Nunes, Tiano Fraser and Bahle Simelane each recorded personal bests (PB) in the 50m breaststroke, highlighting their unwavering commitment to improvement. In a testament to their hard work, Pedro de Sousa and Nosimilo Dlamini achieved their first-ever long course times in the event, marking a significant milestone in their swimming journeys.ESA Secretary General Nozipho Mahlalela expressed her satisfaction with Team Eswatini’s strong start in Namibia, having secured two gold medals and numerous personal best times.

“We are thrilled to see our team off to such an impressive start in Namibia. Our talented athletes have not only brought home two gold medals, but have also achieved numerous personal best times, which is a testament to their hard work and dedication,” she remarked. Mahlalela conveyed her pride and excitement regarding the impressive beginnings of Team Eswatini, noting that the good spirit and determination of the young swimmers are truly inspiring. She emphasised that these talented athletes are not only the future of the sport in Eswatini, but also serve as a motivation and catalyst for further growth and success for the association and the nation as a whole. As the competition continues into its second day, several of Eswatini’s talented athletes are set to compete in various events, with the potential to secure additional medals for their country.
In the 200m backstroke, Hayley Hoy and Bahlelelwe Simelane will represent Eswatini in the female 15-16 category, while Daniella and Kendra will take on the 200m breaststroke for the female 13-14 age group. In the male 13-14 category, Luca, who has already claimed a gold medal and set a new age group record in the 50m breaststroke, will be keen to deliver another impressive performance in the 200m breaststroke. The promising Tsailin and Josea will compete in the 50m butterfly event for the male 11-12 age group, aiming to secure further accolades for Eswatini.
