AFRICA NETBALL CUP: DREAM DEBUT FOR MEN’S NATIONAL TEAM
MBABANE – The Eswatini men’s national netball team have made a remarkable entrance at the 2024 Africa Netball Cup.
The side clinched a hard-fought 49-45 victory over Zimbabwe in their first-ever match on the big stage, yesterday. The tournament is being hosted at the MTC Dome in Swakopmund, Namibia, and will continue until Saturday. A total of 10 African nations are vying for supremacy in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Currently, South Africa hold the title of defending champions in the Africa Netball Championship; however, Eswatini’s stellar performance in their first outing has certainly captured attention.
Bongiwe Gamedze, the Secretary General of the Eswatini National Netball Association (ENNA), expressed her pride in the team’s achievement. “The men’s team played exceptionally well. They demonstrated resilience and composure under pressure, especially considering that Zimbabwe are one of the strongest and most competitive men’s teams on the continent. This win is a significant achievement,” Gamedze remarked. Gamedze further noted that this victory will undoubtedly inspire the players to strive for further success in their upcoming matches.
Unfortunately, Eswatini’s men’s team Head Coach Themba Sifundza, was unavailable for comment at the time of compiling this report. Looking ahead, the Eswatini teams face additional challenges in the coming days.
The women’s team is set to take on Zimbabwe at 4pm today, while the men’s team will compete against Kenya at 10am, as part of the round-robin phase leading up to the semi-finals.
With their spirits buoyed by a thrilling opening victory, the Eswatini players are eager to maintain their momentum and leave their mark.
