TOUGH 2025 OPENING FIXTURE AWAITS ‘BULL’
MBABANE – Football enthusiasts are in for an exhilarating start to the new year, when MTN Premier League action resumes shortly.
The last action of the 2024/25 campaign in this calendar year took place on Saturday, December 14, 2024, before the focus shifted to the national team, Sihlangu, who are striving for their inaugural qualification in the African Nations Championship (CHAN). In the first leg of the final round of qualifiers, which was held last Saturday, Eswatini suffered a 0-2 defeat to Madagascar, with the return leg scheduled for Sunday. However, the MTN Premier League is set to reclaim the spotlight on the first weekend of January. The MTN National First Division (NFD), as confirmed by the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE), will take a short pause, having completed its first round of fixtures.
The Premier League will return with a nail-biting contest for the E100 000 incentive for first-round winners. The year will kick off with some monumental clashes featuring the country’s titans. Mbabane Swallows, who still hold their destiny in their hands, will commence 2025 with an away match against the army side, Young Buffaloes. The ‘Birds’ currently sit third in the league, just two points adrift of the top spot, while ‘Amathole Ezinyathi’ occupy sixth place. The latter have a pending match against Ezulwini United and trail leaders Royal Leopard by eight points. Another highly-anticipated fixture will see Mbabane Highlanders go head-to-head with their rivals, Green Mamba.
This encounter has garnered particular excitement over the past two seasons following the departure of Correctional Services’ Coach Ernest Mavuso from the ‘Bull’s kraal’. Green Mamba currently sit second in the league, tied on 25 points with Leopard. Meanwhile, Sifiso ‘Barnes’ Mkhulisi’s side are precariously positioned just above the relegation zone, four points clear of the drop. In a bid to solidify their position at the top of the table, the log leaders will host Manzini Sea Birds. Notably, Green Mamba and Leopard are set to clash in the final fixture of the first round, a match that could potentially determine the first-round winners.
