ALLY EXPORTING ‘MEGA’ TO BOTSWANA
MBABANE – Following what seemed to be a career-ending setback, there is now a glimmer of hope for Mbabane Highlanders defender Melusi ‘Mega’ Magagula.
Earlier this season, Magagula endured a troubling period when he lost his vision for over a month, which necessitated the suspension of his playing commitments. However, his remarkable resilience has garnered attention beyond our borders, with Botswana Premier League side Mochudi Centre Chiefs expressing interest in securing his services. This interest was corroborated by Mbabane Highlanders Director Ally Kgomongwe, who acknowledged the approach made by the Botswana club.
“I am well-connected across Africa, and the president of Mochudi Centre Chiefs reached out to me recently to enquire about players they could potentially sign. I recommended Mega to him. They are keen to secure the player in the January transfer window, and I cannot obstruct his career progression,” stated Kgomongwe. Kgomongwe also addressed the situation involving team Captain Philani Mkhonto, revealing that he had provided clearance for the player to Manzini Sea Birds Chairman Sicelo Mkhonta.
“The negotiations have been ongoing for some time, but I hesitated to finalise them, as I require Mkhonto at Highlanders. I did indeed provide Mkhonta with the clearance, and we discussed the possibility of the player joining them. However, I have urged him to refrain from registering the player until further notice, as I still need him in the squad.” When questioned about the potential replacement of Head Coach Mthunzi Ginindza, who has taken up a position at the Botswana side Extension Gunners, Kgomongwe indicated his desire to recruit additional players and resolve coaching issues within the team.
However, he underscored that he cannot make progress until matters are sorted out with the current administration. He has called upon those managing the team to engage with him to facilitate his ability to assist the club effectively. Meanwhile, Mochudi Centre Chiefs President Jimmy Kereng confirmed their interest in signing players from outside Botswana.
“We are looking to recruit players from Highlanders, as we have established a positive relationship with them. We hosted them in Gaborone during pre-season, and we will be visiting them next season.”
He expressed a desire to strengthen the squad to compete for the league title, noting that Centre Chiefs currently sit in fifth position in the Botswana top league. Efforts to obtain a comment from Magagula were unsuccessful, as he could not be reached for an immediate response.
