TACTICAL SHIFT FUELS VICTORY – CAPTAIN
MBABANE – Sihlangu captain Sifiso Matse has credited their recent victory to fully embracing the coach’s tactical approach.
Matse made these remarks following Sihlangu’s hard-fought 1-0 win against Madagascar in the second leg of the African Nations Championships (CHAN), which took place at the National Sports Complex in Mauritius, two days ago. However, the result was not enough to earn Eswatini a ticket to the continental football showpiece, after losing 1-2 on aggregate. “Firstly, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the players. We adopted a formation that we have rarely employed, transitioning to a 3-5-2 rather than our customary 4-4-2.
Opportunities
“This strategic shift enabled us to carve out 10 clear scoring opportunities. I am also deeply thankful to all my teammates for their unwavering commitment.” He acknowledged, however, that they squandered several chances. “Our ambition was to go all-out to secure the first goal in the first half. It is clear that the team has been evolving since the coach’s arrival. Initially, we struggled to grasp his tactics, but over time, we have adapted.” He also noted the challenges they faced, particularly regarding conceding unnecessary goals during their home matches. Despite these obstacles, the team performed commendably well, and I remain optimistic that our technical bench will continue to guide us effectively.”
