ESWATINI STADIUM: 4TH MOST EXPENSIVE IN AFRICA
MBABANE – Eswatini is embarking on an ambitious project to construct a world-class national (Olympic) stadium, potentially positioning it as the fourth most expensive stadium in Africa.
Government has announced plans following a meticulous feasibility study, which laid the groundwork for this significant initiative. The stadium is designed with future-proof architectural elements and will incorporate a sustainable funding model, alongside strategic partnerships and a rigorous maintenance programme. This development aims to provide a premier venue for national, regional and international sports and cultural events, thereby enhancing tourism revenues and improving the country’s capacity to host major events. Ultimately, it seeks to cultivate a more competitive national image in sports and culture, driving economic activity. The projected budget for this endeavour stands at E6.015 billion, with funding sourced through a combination of external financing and government allocations.
Identify
There are plans to identify land parcels for sporting facilities by 2026-2029, ensuring a comprehensive approach to the development. In comparison, the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, which cost around E6 billion, serves as a benchmark, seating approximately 65 000 spectators. According to a Business Day article published on November 30, 2024, the most expensive stadium in Africa is the Cape Town Stadium, valued at approximately E10.8 billion. It is followed by the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, with a construction cost of E8.1 billion.
Iconic
Renowned for its iconic arch, this stadium has hosted major events, including the 2010 International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) World Cup. The FNB Stadium (Soccer City) in South Africa ranks third, with an investment of E7.2 billion. As the largest stadium on the continent, it played a pivotal role during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In this context, Eswatini’s proposed national stadium is an exciting prospect. Its design will cater to a wide array of sports and cultural activities, aspiring to meet the high standards of its African counterparts.
Government’s vision includes forming strategic partnerships to ensure sustainable funding and effective maintenance, reflecting a commitment to quality and longevity. By investing in this infrastructure, Eswatini not only aims to enhance its ability to host significant events but to also attract tourists and foster local engagement in sports and the arts. This project represents a critical step toward boosting the country’s economy and elevating its standing on the international sporting stage.
