12 ATHLETES FOR AUSC REGION V
MANZINI – Athletics Eswatini (AE) will be selecting a squad of 12 athletes for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region V Games. This announcement was made yesterday by AE Chief Operating Officer (COO) Nomcebo Simelane. The selection follows the AUSC Region V Qualifiers held at Mavuso Sports Centre, two days ago. The qualifiers showcased exceptional talent, particularly from the TZD Athletics team, which excelled by securing a remarkable 20 medals in total, comprising 11 gold, six silver and three bronze.

Finishing in second place was the Mankayane Athletics Club, which earned two gold medals, while the Mbabane Athletics Club rounded out the top three by bringing home four medals, including one gold, two silver and one bronze. “We will hold the second batch of qualifiers on January 27, during which we will select six girls and the same number of boys to represent the country in the Region V Games,” stated Simelane. This track and field event served as a qualifying round for this year’s Region V Games, scheduled to take place in Namibia from July 4-13, 2025. One of the standout athletes from TZD, Khanyisa Shabangu, expressed her gratitude for her performance. “This was the first race in 2025, and I’m grateful to have won a bronze,” she remarked after clinching bronze in the girls’ under-18 100 metres with a time of 14.24 seconds.
