LISWATI ACTIVIST FOR SA PIRATES
MBABANE – Former ‘Fees Must Fall’ student leader Mcebo Dlamini has reportedly taken on an administrative position at Orlando Pirates, one of South Africa’s top clubs.
According to reports from Soccer Laduma, the Lobamba-born Dlamini, who gained prominence during the 2015 student protests against university tuition fees in South Africa, is now part of the management team at the club. As the President of the Wits University Student Representative Council (SRC), Dlamini was a significant figure in the ‘Fees Must Fall’ movement. However, his activism led to his arrest in 2016 on charges of public violence, and he was subsequently found guilty in 2020, receiving a suspended five-year sentence. Reports indicate that Dlamini has stepped into the role previously held by Floyd Mbele, who left his position as Administrative Manager in 2023.
A source informed Soccer Laduma: “The club is looking to strengthen its management and administrative side. Since Floyd Mbele left, they haven’t officially replaced him, and at the moment, Mcebo is essentially in that position. The club has many different roles within management, and Mcebo is playing his part.” The source further highlighted Dlamini’s influence within the club: “He has brought a different dimension to the club. You can see during games how much the players respect him. This stems from the way he interacts with them, offering advice on various occasions and for different reasons. That’s the role he plays at the moment.” Mbele was a key figure in the club’s success during the 2010/11 season, playing an instrumental role in its day-to-day operations.
