MBABANE – The Managing Director of capital city giants Mbabane Highlanders, Chief Ally Kgomongwe, has officially taken over the control of Botswana premiership giants Extension Gunners. In a statement shared on their official Facebook page, Extension Gunners announced this landmark partnership with Kgomongwe, marking a significant milestone in the club’s history. This development indicates a decisive shift in direction under the guidance of the South African, whose expertise and vision are anticipated to usher in a new era of success and prestige for Extension Gunners (EG).

“EGFC informs its stakeholders, football lovers and well-wishers that it has agreed to partner with Mr Chief Ally Kgomongwe with effect from 14 January 2025. The partnership will see Mr Chief Ally Kgomongwe running the day-to-day activities of the club to restore its glory days, including both our youth and ladies’ teams. Chief Ally Kgomongwe is a renowned football administrator with vast experience. He has managed football teams in South Africa and Swaziland (now Eswatini).

experience

‘‘His extensive experience, management methods and administrative skills are necessary ingredients to propel the fortunes of EGFC beyond expectations. Details of this partnership will be shared during a press conference that will be scheduled soon,” the statement read. Sources privy to the matter revealed that Kgomongwe will not only join the board as a director, but will also inject financial resources into the club by signing a lucrative agreement to lease a stadium in Botswana. This strategic move is expected to generate a steady stream of revenue through stadium bookings, enhancing the club’s financial stability and laying the groundwork for long-term success. When contacted for comment, Kgomongwe confirmed his new role as Managing Director of Extension Gunners. “Yes, it is true that I will be joining Extension Gunners as their Managing Director, and Extension Gunners is now my team,” he stated.

ambitions

Discussing his ambitions for the club, Kgomongwe expressed his primary goal of moving the team up the league table. “We are making significant strides towards strengthening the team’s roster and have already identified key areas for recruitment,” he noted. Regarding his plans for Highlanders, where he holds an 80 per cent stake, he expressed frustration with the current management committee. “I’m waiting for the Highlanders management committee to communicate with me about the direction they want to take,” he said. Extension Gunners FC, based in Gaborone, Botswana, was founded in 1963 and have won the Botswana Premier League a total of seven times, with their last victory in 2007. The club boast a loyal fan base known as the ‘Flaming Blues’ and have produced several notable players. Their rivalry with cross-town rivals Township Rollers is one of the fiercest in Botswana football.
