MANZINI – Mark Carmichael, not only the chairman of Denver Sundowns but also a former teammate of Fanie Terblanche, announced a heartfelt gesture in remembrance of the departed legend.

He was speaking during the memorial service of the late legendary midfield maestro Fanie ‘The General’ Terblanche, which was held at the Swaziland Reformed Church, in Manzini yesterday. “In honour of our fallen brother, Fanie Terblanche, Denver Sundowns will retire his number eight jersey.

This humble act of reverence is but a small token of our gratitude for all that Fanie has given to the club and the game of football. His legacy will forever be enshrined in the history of Denver Sundowns and in our hearts.” Carmichael declared, his voice choked with emotion.

Speaking with warmth and respect, the former Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) and long-time friend of Fanie shared his personal experiences with the late Sihlangu legend. “Fanie was a man of many virtues, he was humble, respectful and disciplined. I could talk with him for hours on end and I am who I am today because of his influence. When I joined Denver Sundowns, I was young and eager to learn, and Fanie took me under his wing,” Carmichael recounted, his voice resonating with affection and sorrow.

Expressed

Meanwhile, most of the mourners who came to pay their last respects to the late ‘The General’ expressed that he was an icon.  In an ambiance that blended the solemnity of mourning with the bittersweet joy of reminiscence, the service proved to be a touching homage to the footballing legend, evoking heartfelt sorrow and bemused laughter in equal measure.

With the church filled to capacity, mourners, unable to gain entry, gathered outside, united in their reverence for the departed icon as the service paid tribute to his life and career in a dignified, moving manner. According to a source, the revered player met his untimely death last  Thursday night. Dennis Terblanche, himself a Denver Sundowns legend and brother of the late Fanie, stood before the mourners as a pillar of strength for his grieving family, sharing heartfelt words of thanks on their behalf.

“Our loss is immeasurable, our sorrow immense, but we take comfort in knowing that Fanie touched so many lives with his talents, both on and off the pitch. To the nation, we extend our gratitude for your support in this time of mourning,” Dennis began, his voice shaking with emotion. Among the eldest of Fanie’s children, Thanky, spoke with fondness and admiration as she remembered her beloved father.
