MANZINI – Three-time champions Mbabane Swallows had to summon their resolve to overcome a resilient Ludzeludze Killers with a hard-fought 3-1 win in the Ingwenyama Cup Last 32, yesterday. On a crisp Sunday afternoon at the Mavuso Sports Centre, the Ingwenyama Cup provided an exciting clash as Premier League side Mbabane Swallows faced off against unpredictable National First Division outfit Ludzeludze Killers before a roaring crowd of over 3 000. Despite being three-time champions of the tournament, Swallows entered the match under immense pressure following a significant player exodus, while Killers, who are yet to reach the Last 16, appeared unperturbed by the pedigree of their opponents. Swallows, who had made two notable signings in Mlamuli ‘Mlaba’ Nkambule, the former Manzini Wanderers Captain, and Menzi Sithole, returning from Royal Leopard, lined up with a mix of experience and fresh legs.

Njongo Mazibuko, also making a return from Red Rhinos, was thrown into the starting XI, while Tristian Roques, a promising development product, started the match on the bench. ‘Mlaba’ brought a sense of stability to the midfield, although concerns about his match fitness loomed large. The match commenced in cagey fashion, with both teams probing for weaknesses in the early stages. However, it was  Swallows who broke the deadlock in the 15th minute when Newman Philiso delivered a beautifully curled free kick that found the head of his teammate Kwakhe Thwala, resulting in a glancing header that nestled into the net. Swallows appeared to be in control, but just seven minutes later,  Killers struck back. Bonisa Ndwandwe punished Swallows for their failure to clear a rebound, capitalising on Sibane Mdluli’s initial effort that ricocheted off the woodwork. Ndwandwe fired home with precision from close range, restoring parity and sending a clear message that Killers would not be intimidated.

confidence

As the game progressed, Killers grew in confidence, but neither team could find the decisive goal before the half-time whistle blew. Sensing the need for a tactical shift, Swallows made two substitutions at the start of the second half. Nhlanhla Ngwenya was brought on to face his former club, with the rusty Sithole making way. The changes yielded immediate effects, as Swallows began to dominate possession once more, while Killers remained resolute in defence, unwilling to capitulate easily. In the 62nd minute, Swallows regained the lead through Mancoba ‘Nciba’ Vilakati, whose less-than-perfect shot found its way into the net after he cleverly beat the offside trap.

The goal invigorated  Swallows, who dictated the terms of the match as they pressed for a third goal. With just five minutes remaining, veteran forward and substitute Sandile Hlatjwako sealed the victory for Swallows, shaking off the defenders to unleash a low shot that beat the goalkeeper after being set up by Phiwokuhle Shabangu. The introduction of Roques late in the match was met with excitement from the roaring crowd, signifying the faith in the young talent. Ultimately,  Swallows survived the scare and progressed to the Last 16 of the Ingwenyama Cup with a 3-1 victory, showcasing resilience and a determination to reclaim their status as cup contenders.
