MANZINI – The excitement surrounding the Ingwenyama Cup has reached fever pitch, as the Last 16 line-up has finally been confirmed.
This follows a day of drama that unfolded at the Mavuso Sports Centre, yesterday. The tournament, which beautifully intertwines football with culture, showcased the depth of talent and competitive spirit within Eswatini’s footballing landscape. The day was marked by a striking contrast in fortunes for the Mbabane giants. Mbabane Swallows managed to claw their way through to the next round with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over National First Division side Ludzeludze Killers.

In a match that tested their mettle, it was the late introduction of substitutes Sandile Hlatjwako and Nhlanhla Ngwenya that turned the tide for Swallows, who initially struggled to break down a resolute Killers side. Their eventual triumph was celebrated by a fervent crowd of over 3 000 spectators. Minister for Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Bongani Nzima led guests and football bigwigs who witnessed the festivities. In stark contrast, Highlanders, previously regarded as contenders, suffered an unexpected exit at the hands of Lozitha Spurs, who clinched a surprising 2-1 victory. The ‘Black Bull’, who have reached the finals twice in the past, were left reeling after displaying a baffling lack of tactical nous. Their struggles were compounded by the erratic performance of goalkeeper Bhekisisa Dlamini, whose failure to manage a set piece led to a crucial goal for Spurs.

Highlanders’ disappointing performance has left fans questioning what has gone wrong for a team once a formidable force in Eswatini football. As the tournament progresses, the stage is set for an exhilarating Last 16 draw, scheduled for this evening. Unlike the previous round, there will be no seeding, ensuring that the upcoming matches will be unpredictable and thrilling. The draw is likely to generate buzz among fans and teams alike, with everyone eager to see how the next phase of the tournament will unfold.
Among the remaining teams, Nkwene Sundowns from Shiselweni stand out as the only regional side still in contention, having knocked out Premier League strugglers Sidwashini United. Nkwene are riding high on their underdog status and will be hoping for a favourable draw as they seek to continue their fairytale run in the competition.

With a prize of E30 000 up for grabs for the best finishers from the lower leagues, the stakes could not be higher for these clubs. The Ingwenyama Cup, sponsored by  the Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accidents Fund (SMVAF), continues to be a celebration of not just football, but also of Eswatini’s rich cultural heritage. As the tournament progresses, it promises to deliver more unforgettable moments, exciting match-ups and the chance for teams to etch their names into the annals of Eswatini football history. Fans can hardly wait to see what the next chapter holds!
