MBABANE – Mbabane Swallows’ want-away Captain Kwakhe ‘Stopper’ Thwala will not come cheap for any team wishing to acquire him in the MTN Premier League.
The former Young Buffaloes development player, who recently submitted a request to the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Player’s Status Committee, is currently attracting interest from up to three teams in the league. According to reliable sources, Thwala, who has an active contract with the Mbabane giants set to expire at the conclusion of the 2027/28 MTN Premier League season, is being pursued by Nsingizini Hotspurs, Royal Leopard and Young Buffaloes. All three clubs are keen to secure his signature before the transfer window closes on February 3, 2025. Sources have indicated that Nsingizini Hotspurs are reportedly leading the race for the talented versatile player, having offered E150 000 for his transfer, surpassing Royal Leopard’s bid of E120 000.

interest

“There is currently significant interest in the player, and it will be intriguing to see where he eventually signs,” the source commented. Another insider, familiar with the player’s contract – which includes a monthly salary of E10 000 – revealed that Thwala’s contract contains a buyout clause of E500 000 for any interested team. However, it remains unclear whether this clause applies to local or international teams. Nsingizini Hotspurs Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Banele Ngobe acknowledged Thwala’s exceptional talent, stating: “Thwala is indeed a good player, and any team in the league would undoubtedly be pleased to have him. However, we are currently in discussions with Mbabane Swallows regarding the potential transfer.”

In response to the swirl of transfer rumours surrounding their star midfielder, Umkhonto KaShaka’s Knowledge ‘Bhambo’ Ngwenya, the club’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) confirmed that Thwala has indeed garnered interest from multiple teams in the Eswatini Premier League. Ngwenya stated, “Thwala’s impressive performances have captured the attention of many clubs, and we are currently evaluating our options. Should any developments arise, we will issue a statement accordingly.” A buyout clause, commonly referred to as a release clause in football, is a provision within a player’s contract that allows them to terminate their agreement with their current club and join another club, provided the specified fee is paid. This clause offers players and their agents greater control over their careers, while enabling teams to safeguard against losing valuable assets without fair compensation.

substantial

The buyout clause is often a substantial amount, with some of the world’s top players commanding release clauses in the hundreds of millions of Euros. Back in 2015, a significant shift occurred in Eswatini’s Premier League transfer market with the headline-grabbing move of Phinda ‘Phindrix’ Dlamini from Red Lions to Green Mamba for a then-record sum of E200 000. This transfer shattered the previous record held by Ndoda ‘Stomach’ Mthethwa, whose move from Manzini Wanderers to Young Buffaloes for E120 000 had stood for four years. Thwala is a product of the Buffaloes’ development system, alongside elite players such as Lindani ‘Rio’ Matsenjwa of Moneni Pirates, Meshack Lushaba from Nsingizini Hotspurs, and Sphesihle Nsimbini of the army side, among others.
