HPC DEVELOPMENT IN PHASES
EZULWINI – The transition of OlympAfrica into a fully-fledged High-Performance Centre (HPC) will be executed in phases. This initiative is one of the critical projects to be undertaken by the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA). President Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa announced that due to the project’s magnitude, the Board has resolved to implement it in stages, commencing with the development and costing of architectural drawings in the coming months. He made these remarks during a press conference at Happy Valley Hotel in Ezulwini, where the Board reported on an Orientation Retreat held over the past weekend. Experts indicate that the average cost of establishing a high-performance centre in Africa can vary significantly based on several factors, including the type of sports facilities, location and the level of technology and training resources provided.

Reports suggest that a basic sports training facility might start from around E1.8 million to E9.3 million, typically encompassing essential training equipment and facilities for a limited number of sports. During the past weekend’s retreat, the Board also focused on critical projects slated for rollout over the next four years. These include the launch and implementation of the recently-developed High-Performance Strategy, which aims to lead the nation to an Olympic podium finish within the next 12 years. The strategy is expected to be launched next month. Mthethwa further announced that this year, the EOCGA will lead teams to the Region V Youth Games in Namibia, the African School Sports Games in Algeria and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) Youth Games, which will take place in Luanda, Angola.
