Eswatini boxers eye glory
MBABANE – EBA is spearheading a rigorous training camp to prepare the national team for upcoming competitive challenges, including the rescheduled 2025 Maputo African Games. The African Union Sports Council (AUSC) has pushed back the prestigious continental event to February 26 - March 3, 2025, due to political unrest in the host nation.
The competition was initially planned for December 2024. Nkosinathi Dlamini, the Eswatini Boxing Association (EBA) Secretary, confirmed the news and outlined the association’s strategic preparations.
“As the Eswatini Boxing Association, we are planning to hold regular weekend training camps for our national team. This will enable our coaches to effectively evaluate and assess the boxers, ensuring they are in peak condition for their upcoming assignments.” The Eswatini boxing squad boasts a talented line-up, including reigning national male champions Thabiso Dlamini, Andiswa Sibandze and Mphilo Dlamini, as well as veteran pugilist Sifiso ‘Ommo’ Ngwenya. Promising female boxers Veliswa Magaya and Temalangeni Dlamini, who recently secured silver medals at the Mandela African Cup in Durban, have also been selected to represent the nation.
Team
The national team will be guided by a technical bench led by Douglas Simelane, with Mpendulo Mbingo and Nkhosinathi Dlamini serving as his assistants. Muzi Shongwe will assume the role of squad manager, having previously worked with the team during the Mandela Cup tournament. The Eswatini Boxing Association is confident that this rigorous preparation will enable its athletes to excel in the upcoming Maputo African Games and other international competitions.
