LUDZELUDZE – Sibonginkosi ‘Gudas’ Dlamini’s untimely death has been attributed to complications arising from meningitis, specifically a fatal headache, his family has revealed. The revelation that meningitis-induced headaches led to the Sidwashini United player’s death was shared by Akhona Dludlu, speaking on behalf of the Dlamini family at his memorial Service held at the Prophetic Voice Church, Ludzeludze. Over 200 mourners attended, including family members, players from various teams and football supporters, many of whom travelled from across the country to pay their last respects.

The service was a mix of emotions, from heartfelt sorrow and tears to moments of laughter, with the worship team’s soulful renditions accompanying the memories shared by those who knew and loved him. Dludlu spoke to the gathered mourners about Dlamini’s life and legacy. He acknowledged that while the nation held the box-to-box midfielder in high regard, there was a need to address the silence surrounding the circumstances of his death. A heavy silence fell upon the tent as these words resonated, evoking a mix of empathy and curiosity.

“The first signs of his illness appeared on Sunday night when he complained of a severe headache, for which he was given ibuprofen. Unfortunately, his suffering continued and at midnight, his condition worsened, leading to his admission to hospital. Despite our hopes for a quick recovery, Dlamini passed away the following day,” he said sorrowfully. Overcome with emotion, Akhona expressed his gratitude to Thabo Langa, a Mbabane Highlanders player, who coordinated donations via social media.“We also implore those who pledged financial assistance via social media to honour the memory of our dearly departed Sibonginkosi to come forward.

These contributions will ensure that Sibonginkosi’s funeral is conducted as we envisioned, in a manner befitting his cherished place in our hearts,” he added. Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. This potentially life-threatening condition can be caused by viral, bacterial, or fungal infections, as well as certain medications, autoimmune diseases, or cancer treatments. Symptoms can include headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, neck stiffness and confusion.
