SPARKS FLY AT 1ST SENIOR RELAY QUALIFIERS
MBABANE – Athletes delivered their best performances yesterday at the Mavuso Sports Centre during Athletics Eswatini (AE) first Senior Relay Qualifiers. Over seven teams brought their sprinters to battle it out for slots in the Team Eswatini squad that is expected to represent the country in Botswana, next month. Botswana is set to host the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Senior Relay Championships next month, where Eswatini is anticipated to compete. In preparation, they hosted the first qualifying event yesterday, with the final one scheduled for March 15, according to Chief Operations Officer (COO), Nomcebo Simelane. Senior athletes were fully charged as they kicked-off the 2025 season yesterday.
Thrills
The men’s races were full of thrills, with each athlete pushing their limits to become the next fastest runner following the retirement of Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa, last August.
The likes of Correctional Services’ Thandaza Zwane, Mthulisi Khoza and Royal Eswatini Police Services’ (REPS) Mlandvo Maziya and Mcebo Mkhaliphi dazzled the stadium with their speed in the 100 and 200-metre (m) sprints and relays. Mbabane Athletics Club’s youngster, Amahle Magongo, also fought for his place. There were fierce battles in the relays, where Correctional Services sprinted away with the 4x100m, while REPS outran their rivals in the 4x400m races. Meanwhile, top female sprinter Bongiwe Mahlalela was not part of the first qualifiers.
