DAMIEN’S SUSPENSION LIFTED

MBABANE - The Eswatini Swimming Association (ESA) has officially lifted the suspension of young swimmer Damien de Sousa. This follows a period of exclusion due to alleged disciplinary issues. This publication previously reported on De Sousa’s suspension by the ESA, which stemmed from allegations of non-attendance at a mandatory training camp held at Simunye’s Mlawula Game Reserve.

The timing of the suspension was particularly unfortunate, coinciding with the national team’s preparations for the prestigious Africa Aquatics Zone IV Championships, which were held in Namibia in December. Recent developments have confirmed that the Swimlab athlete, De Sousa, has been reinstated and participated in the recently-concluded ESA Gala 4 event, hosted by the Pelicans Club. To clarify the circumstances surrounding De Sousa’s suspension, the ESA Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Nozipho Mahlalela, recently confirmed that the swimmer’s suspension had indeed been lifted.

Probation

However, he will remain on a six-month probation period during which the ESA executive will closely monitor his conduct and progress. “Suspension from two important international assignments for the season was sufficient punishment for the athlete. We have high expectations of those we send out to represent the country, as they become ambassadors of Eswatini Sports, not just swimming,” she stated. Mahlalela expressed confidence in the young athlete’s immense talent, suggesting that with the right guidance, he could achieve remarkable feats, potentially qualifying for the illustrious Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, at the recent gala held at Enjabulweni Independent School, De Sousa made a triumphant return to competitive swimming by securing the prestigious Senior Victrix and Victor Ludorum titles. This significant achievement not only highlights De Sousa’s natural aptitude in the pool but also serves as a testament to his dedication and determination to overcome the setback of his suspension, re-asserting his dominance and solidifying his position as a formidable presence in the local swimming scene.
