MBABANE - The Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC) has confirmed that the eagerly-awaited National Sports Awards will be held next month. While the specific date remains pending, ESRC assures the public that the event will honour the nation’s sporting excellence in less than a month. The National Sports Awards serve as a prestigious platform recognising outstanding achievements in sports, celebrating athletes and contributors who have excelled between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024. There are at least 10 confirmed categories for this year’s awards. Nominations are strictly limited to those who have achieved podium finishes at sport-specific or multi-sport events at national, regional, continental and global levels. Recognised national sports associations are urged to submit their nominees via email to the ESRC by February 28, 2025.

Significance

The significance of the National Sports Awards cannot be overstated. They represent the pinnacle of recognition for sports practitioners within the Eswatini sports movement, honouring not only athletes but also administrators, coaches, technical officials and journalists. This inclusive approach aims to acknowledge the diverse contributions that fuel the nation’s sporting success. Winners of the awards will be bestowed with a distinguished turquoise jacket, emblazoned with the national sports emblem - a symbol of excellence that features the purple crested turaco, Eswatini’s national bird, known for its royal associations.

The emblem serves as a beacon of pride, encapsulating unity, harmony and jubilation through its artistic elements. In addition to the National Sports Awards, the ESRC continues to drive initiatives like Shukuma Eswatini, a flagship programme promoting mass participation in sports for health and community benefits and the Women in Sports Eswatini initiative, which strives for gender equity in sports. Furthermore, the Disability Sport Eswatini programme works tirelessly to enhance engagement among individuals with disabilities.

Celebrate

The upcoming awards will not only celebrate the achievements of the past year, but also pave the way for a more inclusive and vibrant sports culture in Eswatini. Dumisani Ntiwane, the Senior Marketing and Communications Officer at the ESRC, emphasised the importance of these awards as a celebration of excellence and a catalyst for further growth in the nation’s sporting landscape.“Our recognised national sports associations are urged to submit their respective nominees on or before Friday, February 28, 2025 via email at zama@sportscouncil.org.sz and or ntiwane@sportscouncil.org.sz.
