ESRC’S E400K FOR COSSASA ATHLETICS CHAMPS
MBABANE – Significant support!
The Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC) has allocated E400 000 towards the 2025 COSSASA Track and Field Athletics Championships. The Confederation of Schools Association of Southern Africa (COSSASA) are scheduled to take place here in Eswatini from April 29 to May 1, 2025.The Eswatini Schools Sports Association (ESSA) will proudly host this prestigious event, taking over from Zimbabwe, which organised the 2024 edition in Bulawayo.
Gratitude
ESSA President Zakhele Myeni expressed his gratitude for the ESRC’s backing, stating: “We are grateful for the support we received from the Sports Council, which will go a long way in the implementation of the event.
“They provided us with E400 000.” However, Myeni underscored that this funding is insufficient to cover all expenses.
“We had budgeted E900 000 to cater for accommodation, uniforms, as well as spikes for the athletes,” he explained.
He further noted that they are actively engaging with local businesses, encouraging them to collaborate in hosting this regional schools competition. He emphasised that such partnerships would offer valuable advertising opportunities for businesses, both within Eswatini and on an international scale.
Committed
Myeni also revealed that the Ministry of Education and Training has committed to providing transportation for the teams participating in the championships. Meanwhile, COSSASA President Arthur Maposa and Secretary General Letsweletse Jonas are currently in the country to finalise logistical arrangements ahead of the championships. The track events have been scheduled for Somhlolo National Stadium, while ESSA, according to Myeni, is still in negotiations with the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) regarding the venue for the field events.
