FIRE RESCUE NETBALL TEAM LAUNCHED
MBABANE – There is a new kid on the block in the world of netball. That is the Fire Rescue Netball team from the Eswatini National Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (ENFRES). It was officially launched yesterday at Coronation Park. The Oscar Tsabedze’s coached team made its debut in the Swaziland Building Society (SBS) Hhohho Regional League, Mbabane Zone, against log leaders, Hustlers. However, they had a rocky start, suffering a 24-4 defeat.
However, the unveiling of the team was conducted by Fire Instructor and the team’s Assistant Manager Banele Dlamini, on behalf of Team Manager Thamsanqa Dlamini. “Our netball team has played its first official game, which marks the expansion of our involvement in sports. We already have a volleyball team competing in the B-Division, and this development excites us as it demonstrates that our focus isn’t just on fire-fighting and rescue operations, but also on promoting the wellness of our staff through sports participation,” Dlamini said.
Gratitude
He went on to express his gratitude to Chief Fire Officer Luke Lushaba, who spearheads this sports initiative and has been a strong advocate for fit and healthy workers. Dlamini also mentioned that Lushaba has already laid a solid foundation by recently hosting a netball tournament for ENFRES different stations to the tune of E20 000. “We are also looking to make a mark on the sport in the country. Our mandate is clear – we’re aiming to shoot for the top and reach elite levels. We want to compete at a high standard, foster a competitive environment in local sports, and in the long-run produce national team players who will win medals for the country,’’ the fire instructor added.
Dlamini, who is also nicknamed ‘Wounded Bear’, said the ambition extends not just to netball but to all the teams they plan to establish in the future across various sporting codes.
Reflecting on the team’s tough debut, Dlamini described it as a blessing in disguise to face one of the strongest clubs in their first game. “Playing against the best allowed us to measure ourselves. By watching them in action and analysing the scoreline, I’m confident that we’ll soon hit our stride and become unstoppable,” he concluded.
