‘SKOSH’ EYES NATIONAL GLORY
MBABANE – Young Buffaloes Ladies Head Coach Wandile ‘Skosh’ Shabangu has expressed confidence that his players will perform admirably for the national team, Sitsebe.
This assertion follows their emphatic 4-0 victory over arch-rivals Manzini Wanderers at the Manzini Club in the Women’s Ingwenyama Cup quarter-finals, this past Saturday. Shabangu noted that his squad is preparing diligently, despite time constraints. He highlighted the significant progress being made within the team. “Our side has been preparing well; it’s just that we have faced challenges with time due to numerous commitments.
However, I can see the progress the team is making; they are genuinely striving to improve,” said the former Young Buffaloes midfielder. The army ladies’ coach was also questioned about the goalkeeping changes he implemented against a high-scoring team like Wanderers. “In recent days, our first-choice goalkeeper, Gcinile, has been unwell, while Nokwanda has demonstrated an eagerness to start the game. I believe Nokwanda has been our first choice in the past four games, and I saw no reason to change her, so I decided she should continue,” added Shabangu.
It has also been noted that Young Buffaloes are adopting a more patient style of football, contrasting with their usual power play. Shabangu elaborated that this approach continues the philosophy established by former Coach Fisiwe Fakudze, as well as drawing from the men’s side’s strategies. “What I have contributed is assisting the ladies in becoming more comfortable on the ball and avoiding being too direct, as this creates problems when we compete internationally,” said the ladies’ team coach.
As Young Buffaloes have been the dominant force in the women’s national team in recent years, being the top club in the women’s top division, the national squad typically comprises a substantial number of their players. This is attributed to the squad’s fitness levels and competitiveness, complemented by their consecutive league title wins and individual accolades.
However, it is noteworthy that Bongani Makhukhula, the Sitsebe Coach, has selected more players from the Correctional Services side, with seven players called up from Green Mamba.
Meanwhile, Buffaloes have six players, while Manzini Wanderers and Nsingizini Hotspurs also have a fair share of the remaining slots in the national team.
