MBABANE - On your marks! Excitement is in the air as schools across Eswatini prepare to lace up their running shoes for the highly-anticipated athletics season. The Eswatini Schools Sports Association (ESSA) has announced that branch competitions will kick off early next month, igniting a nationwide search for the country’s rising track and field stars. Before the starting pistol fires, however, ESSA is investing in the future of its athletes. President Zakhele Myeni revealed that the association’s 2025 sports calendar begins with crucial coaching workshops. These sessions will be held at Swazi National High School in Matsapha to equip teachers and coaches with the latest training techniques and knowledge across all sporting codes.

“We have already sent letters to schools requesting the sports teachers or coaches to attend this important workshop,” Myeni confirmed. The workshop, which begins today (yesterday) and runs until tomorrow, is expected to enhance the coaching standards of all schools’ sports across the country. Myeni explained that the first competitive event on the ESSA calendar will be the track and field athletics competitions, scheduled for March in all ESSA branches. These local meets will serve as a crucial stepping stone for aspiring athletes, as the best of the best will then be selected at the national championships in April.

These championships hold particular significance this year, as they will be used to select the athletes who will represent Eswatini at the Confederation of Schools Sports Association of Southern Africa (COSSASA) Games. It is worth noting that the country will have the honour of hosting the 2025 COSSASA Athletics Track and Field Championship mid-year. This prestigious event will bring together top athletes from across the region, providing a platform for Eswatini’s youngsters to shine on home soil.
