MBABANE – “I hope and believe that one day I will receive a national team call-up, so I can play my part in the success of the country’s national team.”

These were the heartfelt words of Moneni Pirates’ star player Nkosinathi ‘Stina’ Shongwe after being awarded a cheque for E6 000 for his recognition as Player of the Month for January. Shongwe was celebrated alongside the outstanding Balogun Hassan Kehinde of Denver Sundowns, who also secured the Player of the Month title for January in the National First Division, earning a prize of E2 000.

Their exceptional performances have set a high standard for the remainder of the season. In the runner-up position was Young Buffaloes’ sensational striker Phiwa ‘Slwabelwabe’ Dlamini, while Sambulo ‘Masoso’ Simelane of Nsingizini Hotspurs rounded out the top three. Kehinde’s remarkable contributions to Denver Sundowns were underscored by a brilliant two-goal performance, complemented by an assist, in a single match during the month.

Following him in the rankings was Lozitha Spurs’ Njabulo Gama, with Phila Dlamini of Masundvwini Royal Swallows completing the top three. Shongwe, a pivotal figure in the Moneni Pirates’ attacking line-up, expressed profound gratitude for the accolade, stating that it would motivate him to continue his hard work and push further in his football journey.

Call-up

“The award means a great deal to me. It will help boost my confidence on the pitch, and one of my biggest dreams is to receive a call-up to the national team. I want to gain exposure and experience, and most importantly, represent my country,” Shongwe remarked. Similarly, Kehinde was appreciative of his achievement but emphasised his commitment to ongoing improvement. He remains determined to strive for excellence and secure further accolades. “I have worked really hard for this award, but I know I still have more to give. I will continue to push myself to become the best version of myself, because anything is possible if you put in the effort,” Kehinde stated.
