BATTLING AMAWELE JUMP TO 3RD SPOT

MANZINI - Amawele FC edged Lozitha Spurs 1-0 in a gripping MTN National First Division League encounter at the Manzini Club Sports Ground yesterday, seizing the opportunity to leapfrog into third place on the table.

Played under challenging pitch conditions, it was Amawele who adapted better. The breakthrough came early in the 11th minute when the visitors’ fleet-footed winger, Lindo Zwane, capitalised on a defensive lapse to slam home from close range. His strike punished a sluggish Lozitha backline and gave the visitors a slender, but crucial advantage.

The first half ebbed and flowed, with Amawele carving out the better chances, largely through the presence of their talismanic striker, Mhlengi Mngomezulu. The latter, who is the league’s joint top scorer, with 10 goals to his name, was a constant menace, but Lozitha managed to limit further damage before the interval.

Lozitha, under the guidance of the experienced Coach Christian Thwala, emerged for the second half with renewed intent. The introduction of the electrifying winger Sibonelo Motsa injected much-needed pace into the home side’s attack. However, their finishing left much to be desired.

Amawele had to withstand a late onslaught as Lozitha pushed for an equaliser. Mngomezulu, surprisingly, squandered a golden opportunity in the 85th minute to put the game to bed, slicing his effort wide from close range. Nonetheless, Amawele’s defence held firm in the dying moments to secure the win.
The result sees Amawele leap to third with 25 points, just two shy of second-placed Denver Sundowns. Lozitha, now on 23 points, must regroup as they slip further from contention. For Amawele, this hard-fought victory keeps their promotion hopes alive.
