SITSEBE FACE UPHILL BATTLE AFTER 1ST LEG DEFEAT

LOBAMBA – Namibia’s Brave Gladiators secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Eswatini’s Sitsebe in the first leg of their 2026 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier at Somhlolo National Stadium yesterday afternoon.

Namibia enjoyed an explosive start, taking the lead within the first minute. A lapse in concentration from the home defence allowed Fiola Vlite to capitalise on a well-placed pass from Millicent Hikuam, unleashing a powerful left-footed volley past the Eswatini goalkeeper.

The visitors continued their relentless pressure, doubling their advantage in the 16th minute when Ivone Kooper pounced on a defensive error and finished clinically. Eswatini, managed by Bongani Makhukhula, sought to change their fortunes, bringing on Khulekile Mamba for Bongekile Nkambule in the 36th minute.

The substitution injected some much-needed energy into the home side’s midfield, but they struggled to create clear-cut chances. Nonjabuliso Mokgale’s long-range effort was easily dealt with by Namibia’s goalkeeper, Melissa Matheus, who remained calm and composed throughout.

The home crowd’s hopes were dashed in the final moments of the game when Hilma Kanyama struck a stunning goal from outside the box in the 90th minute. Juliana Blou’s clever pass found Kanyama, whose powerful shot left the goalkeeper with no chance.

Despite Eswatini’s efforts to find a late consolation goal, Namibia’s well-organised defence held firm. Mokgale’s late attempts were thwarted, leaving the hosts with a significant deficit to overcome in the return leg. The second leg is scheduled for February 26 at Dobsonville Stadium in Johannesburg.
