Pirates ..........................(0)0
Nsingizini .....................(0)0

MANZINI – In front of an electrifying crowd, Moneni Pirates and Nsingizini Hotspurs fought out a pulsating goalless draw.

Both sides, renowned for their flair and tactical organisation, gave the fans plenty to cheer about despite the lack of goals in the highly-anticipated MTN Premier League ‘Super Sunday’ showdown at Mavuso Sports Centre yesterday.

Coming into the clash, Nsingizini Hotspurs, sitting third on the table, were desperate for all three points to keep pace with league leaders Green Mamba and Royal Leopard.

Hungry

Meanwhile, Moneni Pirates, starting the day in sixth, were equally hungry for victory to maintain their push for a coveted top-four finish. Pirates faced a significant setback with the absence of  the injured duo of Menzi ‘Magawugawu’ Simelane and midfield maestro Mazwi Sihlongonyane. Nevertheless, they looked determined to rise to the occasion on home soil.

The match began with a frenetic pace, as both sides sought an early breakthrough. Moneni’s marksman Senanelo Nkambule spurned a golden opportunity inside 10 minutes, firing wide after breaking free of the defence. Moments later, full-back Vukile Khumalo tested Nsingizini’s goalkeeper, Khanyakezwe Shabalala, with a venomous free kick that was expertly parried away.

Nsingizini, bolstered by attacking threats such as Thubelihle Mavuso and Neliswa ‘Tiger’ Dlamini, showed their own intent. Ayanda Gadlela’s audacious long-range strike just before the half-time whistle forced a smart save from Pirates shot-stopper Bernard Ayikwei. Despite chances at both ends, the teams went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.

The second half began with Moneni Pirates showing renewed urgency. Phumlani Shongwe came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock with a thunderous shot that clipped the crossbar. Khumalo also threatened minutes later with a fierce strike, but Shabalala once again rose to the occasion.

However, Pirates’ attacking struggles persisted, even after the introduction of Ivorian import Bi Zahi Herve, who showed flashes of brilliance. Meanwhile, Nsingizini Hotspurs continued to probe through Gadlela, whose 77th-minute effort was thwarted by Ayikwei’s alert goalkeeping. In a moment that left Pirates fans in disbelief, Nkambule failed to capitalise on an open net just two minutes later, squandering what looked like a certain goal.

Dramatic

The final moments were nothing short of dramatic. Deep into stoppage time, Gadlela’s bullet header from close range appeared destined for the back of the net, but Ayikwei produced a stunning point-blank save to preserve the stalemate.

While both teams will rue missed opportunities, the goalless draw reflects the quality and resilience of two of the league’s finest sides.

For Nsingizini Hotspurs, the result sees them lose ground on the leaders, while Moneni Pirates must settle for a point in their quest for a higher league position.

Though the score remained 0-0, the passion and excitement on display ensured fans left the stadium thoroughly entertained.
