MBABANE – In a remarkable display of commitment to road safety, the Kusekhaya Cycling Club, in collaboration with Galp Eswatini, orchestrated an impactful safety awareness ride.

It was staged between Ezulwini and Matsapha, this past Saturday. This event, aimed at enlightening the public on the vital importance of road-sharing among all users, attracted more than 50 cyclists from various clubs throughout the kingdom. Notably, numerous independent cyclists joined the initiative, underscoring the communal spirit of road safety advocacy.

Prticipation

The event was bolstered by the participation of key stakeholders involved in ensuring the safety of cyclists on our roads. Represented were the Road Safety Council, the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS), Emergency Medical Services, the Eswatini Cycling Association and local media outlets. Speakers at the gathering emphasised the necessity for all road users to exhibit mindfulness towards one another. They urged individuals to enhance their visibility, thereby significantly reducing the likelihood of accidents.

In a compelling address on behalf of Galp Eswatini, Managing Director Bruno Marques articulated that safety remains a paramount priority for the organisation, particularly as they navigate the roads in the delivery of their products. He asserted their unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy regarding the loss of life, which motivates their active involvement in road safety initiatives.

Mduduzi Kaudi from Kusekhaya Cycling reinforced these sentiments, urging cyclists to take proactive measures to mitigate risks. He emphasised the importance of equipping oneself with lights, donning high-visibility colours and using reflectors when riding, particularly in low-light conditions.

Cycling is not merely a pastime; it is a transformative sport that enhances physical fitness, mental well-being and environmental sustainability. It bolsters cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and aids in weight management, while alleviating stress and elevating mood. Moreover, cycling serves as an eco-friendly mode of transport, significantly curbing carbon emissions and alleviating traffic congestion.

To inspire greater participation in cycling, it is imperative to prioritise road safety and cultivate a culture of respect and consideration among all road users. In doing so, we can forge a healthier, greener and more inclusive community for all.

The Kusekhaya Cycling Club proudly stands as a registered member of the Eswatini Cycling Association (CAS), with a vibrant presence spanning the nation. With over 40 active members, the club is steadfastly dedicated to both the sport of cycling and the advancement of community welfare.
