'BIRDS' IN TOUGH GAMES AFTER FIFA BREAK
MBABANE – City giants, Mbabane Swallows will have to dig deep to find their wings after the FIFA break as they face six gruelling fixtures.
The FIFA break runs from today until Tuesday, March 25, and as the seven-time MTN Premier League champions will return to action, they will encounter a series of tough matches that could make or break their season. This is according to the tentative Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) master fixture.
With a recent shake-up in the squad, having released several key players, ‘Birds’ are now looking for new talent to soar above the competition. They are sixth on MTN Premier League charts, and just 10 points shy of the top spot.
Their immediate challenge will come from Green Mamba, who they beat with a solitary goal in their first-round encounter. The Ernest Mavuso charges sit second in the league, jointly at 39 points with leaders, Royal Leopard. This match is sure to be a ‘venomous test’ for the Swallows, demanding nothing less than some best performances from both camps.
Following this clash, the Sindiso Gama troops will be eager to settle the score with Moneni Pirates, who handed them their first defeat of the 2024/25 MTN Premier League season and recently knocked them out of the Ingwenyama Cup competition. Pirates are also in the title race, sitting fourth in the league standings, making this fixture not just a grudge match, but also a critical contest in the title chase.
Next up, Swallows will face the eight-time champions Leopard, followed by a match against the struggling Rangers FC. These games will set the tone for the country’s biggest derby.
soared
In week 22 fixture, they will host their city rivals, Mbabane Highlanders. In their previous meeting, ‘Birds’ soared over ‘Bull’ while the latter grappled with internal turmoil. But Highlanders have since regained their footing, and they will be hungry to avenge that loss, especially after Swallows’ dominant performances over them last season.
To wrap up this gruelling series, the red and white outfit crossswords with Nsingizini Hotspurs. Nsingizini are currently perched in third place, just three points off the summit.
