EFA MISSES OUT ON SPORTS AWARDS
MBABANE – The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) has come under scrutiny for its repeated failure to submit nominations for the annual National Sports Awards.
This issue has been a topic of concern, particularly following the organisation’s absence from the awards for the past two years.
The lack of participation was notably evident during the 2025 National Sports Awards, which took place at Esibayeni Lodge this past Friday, hosted by the Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC).
It is important to highlight that the EFA also neglected to provide nominations in the previous edition of the awards, continuing this trend into the recent event. In an effort to understand this situation, this publication reached out to ESRC Media Manager, Dumsani Ntiwane.
compel
He clarified that while all associations recognised by the ESRC are eligible for the awards, the council lacks the authority to compel organisations to participate.
“The process involves each association nominating deserving individuals within their respective categories.
However, if an association chooses not to do so, it is impossible for the Sports Council to force their participation,” Ntiwane explained. Meanwhile, EFA Marketing and Communications Officer, Muzi ‘Rhoo’ Radebe, indicated that he was yet to confirm whether the EFA had received any correspondence from the ESRC regarding the submission of nominees.
The last time the EFA nominated sports personalities for the awards was in 2017, when they submitted former national team player Tony ‘TT’ Tsabedze, who played for Sihlangu and Mbabane Swallows, for the Outstanding Sportsman of the Year award.
nominated
The late former Mbabane Swallows Coach Thabo ‘Koki’ Vilakati was nominated for the Outstanding Sports Coach, while EFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Frederick Mngomezulu was nominated for the Outstanding Sports Administrator Award.
The National Sports Awards aim to recognise and motivate excellence in sports participation among all practitioners in the country.
The inaugural awards were held in November 2017 at the Royal Swazi Convention Centre in Ezulwini.
It is noteworthy that nominations are guided by the National Sports Awards Rulebook, which is designed to involve contributions from over 25 recognised National Sports Associations and other relevant stakeholders, including the media.
