MBABANE – It is just a week away from the starting gun firing for the first marathon of the year!

The Lubombo Marathon is set to take place at Siteki Sports Ground next Saturday and excitement is in the air like a runner on the home stretch. As the registration deadline looms, the 500 mark seems set to be hit this weekend. However, preparing for a marathon in a lowveld environment requires specific considerations due to the unique climate and terrain. Here are some tailored tips to help you get ready in the week leading up to the race:
1.    Adjust to the climate: The lowveld can be hot and humid, so it is essential to acclimatise your body to these conditions. If possible, train in similar weather to help your body adapt. This will improve your performance and comfort on race day.
2.    Increase fluid intake: Start hydrating well in advance. Drink plenty of water and consider electrolyte drinks to maintain your sodium levels, especially if you sweat heavily in the heat. Aim to drink at least 2-3 litres of water daily leading up to the race.
3.    Carbohydrate loading: In the days leading up to the marathon, increase your carbohydrate intake to maximise glycogen stores. Foods like pasta, rice and potatoes should be your go-to options. Avoid heavy foods steer clear of heavy, greasy foods that could upset your stomach.
5.    Gear preparation: Test your gear during your shorter runs to ensure comfort and functionality. Avoid trying anything new on race day.
7.     Plan race day logistics: Familiarise yourself with the race route, starting time and parking options. Knowing these details will help you avoid unnecessary stress on race day.
