MBABANE –Royal Flames sparked a fiery performance to defeat long-time rivals Green Lightning 60-53, claiming the title and a prize of E7 500, along with gold medals and a trophy.

This was during the conclusion of the first round of the Swaziland Building Society (SBS) Netball League.

The first quarter set the tone, with the Flames edging the Correctional Services team 17-14 yesterday at Mavuso Sports Centre.

Their dominance continued as they held a strong 29-26 lead in the second quarter.

The third quarter turned into a thrilling battle, with both teams fighting for supremacy. Green Lightning closed the gap to just one point, but the Flames kept their cool, leading 42-41 heading into the final quarter.

decider

The decider saw Royal Flames flex their muscles, sealing their victory with a final score of 60-53.

The runners-ups, Green Lightning, walked home with E5 000 and on third position were the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) ladies who took home a prize of E3 500.

Royal Flames Captain, Bathabile Nkambule, described the game as intense but expressed gratitude for her team’s resilience, especially in the crucial third quarter.

“It was a tough game, but we stayed focused and came out on top. The third quarter was the toughest, with our opponents trying to overtake us, but we stayed mentally strong and ready to face them,” Nkambule said.

She urged players to prioritise self-care and training during the break. “Rest is important, but training should continue so we’re in top shape when the league resumes,” she added.

On the other hand, Green Lightning’s Captain, Abigail Simelane, expressed disappointment over the loss but promised a strong return in future matches.

Best

“We gave our best, but it wasn’t our day. We trained well, and though we were prepared, we just didn’t get the result we hoped for. During the off-season, players need to rest and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” Simelane stated.
In the men’s category, Green Lightning claimed another win, triumphing over Royal Flames 47-35 in a highly-charged contest.

With this victory, they defended their first-round title from the SBS 2023/24 League.
