TEAM G COACH KELLY OFF TO SWITZERLAND
SIKHUPHE – William Kelly, the Team G’s coach, flew to Switzerland yesterday for the International Cycling Union (UCI) Level 3 Diploma.
The seasoned cyclist departed King Mswati III International Airport with a rousing send-off from Team G, including Manager Philile Gulwako and four-time national champion Muzi Shabangu,Sifiso Gulwako and lady champ Ntsiki Mdlovu among other cyclists.
He is set for a three-week course at the UCI’s Aigle base, funded by the Olympic Solidarity Committee via the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) at E100 000.
“Maxwell Jele and Pretty Simelane at EOCGA nailed the visa logistics,” Kelly said. “I’ll return with elite skills to push Eswatini cycling forward.”
Kelly joined Team G in August 2024, steering the year-old outfit—founded by Sifiso and Philile Gulwako—to rapid success. Last season, Shabangu blitzed the 120km 2Fast2 Furious November race, Sivuyile Gulwako won the junior 90km at Mhlume Lowveld, and Gcinile Khumalo topped the ladies’ open. This year, Shabangu cracked the top 20 at Cape Argus.
Aiming big, Kelly said, “Muzi’s primed for Rwanda’s World Champs in September, then the 2026 Commonwealth Games and 2028 Olympics. It’s a 12-year slog to peak, but we’re in it.” Shabangu, could be Eswatini’s Olympic pioneer.
Shabangu chimed in, “William’s Swiss stint will give us a proper edge—Philile’s backing makes it all possible.”
Philile, Team G’s manager, added, “When he’s back, we’ll sharpen our game and lift the sport here.” Kelly’s mission could turbocharge a team already on the ascent.
