COACHES TIP LEOPARD FOR GLORY
MBABANE – Coaches fancy Royal Leopard to win the Ingwenyama Cup final ahead of Moneni Pirates this Sunday at Somhlolo National Stadium.
A total of 10 000 tickets are up for grabs, where the winners will bag E1.45 million and the runners-up take home E650 000. It is the richest prize in Eswatini football, while the final is the biggest sporting event in the country. The previous winners of the tournament are Green Mamba who beat Mbabane Swallows 1-0, courtesy of Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa’s goal. Swallows have won the tournament three times (2015/16/17/18) with Buffaloes taking it home once (2019) while Green Mamba (2020-2023) have won it twice.
Randomly interviewed coaches shared their views yesterday, with most tipping Leopard to come out on top.
Illovo’s Gcina Dlamini was clear: “Leopard will walk away with it because they are on form. They are firing from all cylinders—as you’ll recall, they just beat Ezulwini United 7-1 in their last league game. They’ll go into this final motivated. Leopard also have depth—they almost have a backup in each position, which makes them a threat. Even when they make substitutions, they introduce equally strong players.”
He noted their 5-0 league win over Pirates, adding: “They’ll want to maintain this in the finals,” though he admitted Pirates could nick it if well-prepared.
Further, Mbabane Swallows’ Sindiso Gama said: “It’s tough to say. Leopard have an upper hand—been in many finals in past tournaments. They also have experience over Pirates’ squad and a balanced team. Pirates have new kids on the block, and the coach is trying to instil his philosophy. Edwin Matsebula has been there for some time. But a game of football is a game of surprise.”
Ludzeludze Killers’ Mpumelelo Ngwenya stayed neutral: “Can’t put my head on the block. Both coaches are known to be winners. Leopard want it. We won’t read the score of the league. I can’t really say who is going to win it.”
Ezulwini United’s Musa Manyatsi added, “It’s a tricky one. Complacency might creep in because of the 7-1. Pirates might want to give their supporters a boost. Leopard have an upper hand—on paper, they have experience, a winning mentality and an unbeaten run.”
