SISONKHE FACE POINTS REDUCTION
MBABANE – They are in serious trouble!
MTN Premier League newcomers Sisonkhe are facing the possibility of a points deduction due to their failure to comply with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) club licensing regulations. The Manzini-based outfit, who recently achieved a league double over giants Mbabane Highlanders after defeating them 2-1 on Sunday at Mavuso Sports Centre, are falling short of the required standards.
It is worth noting that Sisonkhe’s non-compliance with the continental football governing body’s club licensing requirements is primarily due to their inability to register a development team to compete in the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Under-19 League. This league commenced two weeks ago. The Bamnumzane, as Sisonkhe are affectionately known in local football circles, are yet to participate in the league.
A source close to the team revealed that the issue stems from the club’s failure to meet the mandatory standards outlined by the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) in their licensing regulations. Under Article 2.3 of the EFA Compliance Manual, all teams must fulfil the minimum standards to be eligible for registration. This shortfall has prevented them from being included in the league.
Unlike their rivals, Sisonkhe have not obtained the official licence required to participate. As a result, instead of the planned 14 teams, there are now only 13 clubs actively competing in the league, with a standby team filling the gap. Benele Masondo, Football Manager of the PLE, clarified the situation, explaining that the club must first secure its official operating licence before it could join the competition.
“The team must acquire a licence by officially registering with EFA,” Masondo stated.
“The EFA is responsible for ensuring that both teams and players are properly licensed. Once this is done, we can slot them into the match schedule,” he added.
According to CAF, a club that fails to meet the club licensing requirements may face sanctions such as fines, points deductions, exclusion from CAF competitions and even a prohibition on registering new players. Meanwhile, no immediate comment could be obtained from the team by the time this report was compiled.
