CAMEROON DRAW ELEVATES SIHLANGU
MBABANE – The national men’s football team, Sihlangu, have made a significant leap in the FIFA rankings.
This follows a fairly good performance in the recent International Federation of Association of Football (FIFA) 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.
Sihlangu commenced their last two qualifying games with a resilient goalless draw against Africa’s heavyweights Cameroon on Wednesday, March 19, followed by a 3-all draw with Mauritius during the FIFA international break.
This impressive performance has propelled Eswatini up the rankings, ascending four places in the latest release. FIFA published the rankings yesterday, with the next update due in 97 days. Zdravko ‘Loga’ Logarusic’s men now sit at 155th in the standings, out of a total of 210 nations. They had previously ranked 159th in the December and November 2024 listings. Cameroon, on the other hand, dropped a place to occupy the 50th spot.
Satisfaction
Last year, Sihlangu maintained their position in the first ranking released in February but managed to climb one spot in the following month. Logarusic expressed his satisfaction with the improvements, stating they are laying a strong foundation for building a competitive team. “It’s step by step. We have a quality base, and we can improve further; nothing comes overnight. We have a solid foundation to build a strong team that can compete in Africa and earn respect,” the Croatian coach said. Some fans on the publication’s Facebook page expressed pride in the boys yesterday.
The highest rank in history for Eswatini was 88th. The lowest was 190th.
Meanwhile, reigning world champions Argentina are still at the summit of the global football charts. Morocco are the top-ranked country in Africa and 12th in the world. A higher ranking is crucial as it impacts tournament seeding. The best-ranked nations are typically exempted from the preliminary rounds, giving them a better shot at glory.
