MBABANE – While Eswatini may not be competing on the pitch at the TotalEnergies AFCON Under-20 finals, the nation will still have its representatives at the tournament.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is set to kick off the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt next month, running from April 26 to May 18, 2025. This prestigious event will feature 13 teams vying for continental glory and competing for four coveted qualification spots for the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) Under-20 World Cup in Chile in 2025.

Despite Eswatini’s absence from the playing field, two match officials will proudly represent the country at the tournament. According to a list of match officials released by CAF, Eswatini’s sole Video Assistant Referee (VAR) specialist, Letticia Vianna, has been selected as one of the tournament’s 10 experts.

Vianna is no stranger to high-stakes continental competitions, having demonstrated her skills at various tournaments. Just a few days ago, she was part of the VAR team for the Champions League clash between Al Ahly and Al Hilal. Joining Vianna in Egypt will be Celumusa Phiri, who has been entrusted with assistant referee duties.

Phiri, a FIFA-accredited assistant referee, was recently invited to participate in the CAF Young Talent Referees Course held in Abidjan, Côte d’ Ivoire, from March 3 to 8, 2025. Depending on the number of games they officiate, each official is expected to earn a minimum of E22 400 per match, based on a rate of US$1 200 per match.

If they officiate in at least two matches each, they will share over E50 000. Reports suggest each official is expected to officiate  in minimum two games, thereby netting over E44 000 each. This will take their total earnings to over E80 000. Meanwhile, fans have expressed their excitement and support for the two officials, wishing them the best of luck in their continental assignments.
Many took to the newspaper’s Facebook page yesterday to share their well-wishes.
