(Acting Weekend Sports Editor)

Less than a month since the demise of former Sihlangu and Royal Leopards striker, Mzwandile ‘Zoo’ Mamba and ex-FA President Philemon Mkhaliphi, tragedy has struck once again.

The death of former Hhohho Regional Football Association (HRFA) chairman Jackie ‘Gogo’ Mathonsi and Mbabane Highlanders Manager Mbongiseni ‘Mthofi’ Khumalo has left the football landscape in great shock.

Not that the two gentlemen were football ‘saints’ but it is the determination and passion they have shown while serving the sport that has captivated many.

And to die on the same day (Thursday 28 October) in Johannesburg hospital and MediSun Clinic respectively was what made their demise unfathomable. We are all still shocked.

I personally had many run ins with Mathonsi as I executed my duties as a sports journalist, but in everything I always admired his bravery and oozing confidence when tackling issues.

He was no doubt very unpopular to many, but even his detractors knew that give Jackie a chance to speak, then you will end up agreeing with what he was saying whether wrong or right.

A lot has been said about ‘Gogo’ in football, but I liked his unwavering loyalty to the current leadership status quo.

He also loved his country.

Meanwhile, the late ‘Black Bull’ Manager ‘Mthofi’ Khumalo was the face of Super League side Lobamba Wanderers.

He dedicated most of his time in the team. At one time, he took it to the National First Division League.

He loved soccer. And it was Highlanders where he cemented his reputation in local football.

Winning three Swazi Telecom Charity Cups, and two SwaziBank Cups in a space of four seasons, is what many of his peers dream about.

He died a decorated man.

To the two gentlemen, I wish on behalf of the Times Sports Desk to salute you for dedicating your time and efforts in the sport.

The sacrifices you made and to your family we say may the Lord God through His Son Jesus Christ comfort you in these trying times.

REST IN PEACE ‘GOGO’ AND ‘MTHOFI’
